In this review, I will share my impressions of Starfield, one of Bethesda’s most anticipated games. As a fan of their previous titles like Skyrim and the Fallout series, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, Starfield fell far short of those hopes.
First Impressions and Inspirations
After downloading a massive amount of data and paying a hefty price, I was looking forward to an engaging story and innovative mechanics. Instead, the game feels like a patchwork of elements borrowed from Mass Effect, Cyberpunk 2077, and even the film Interstellar. I wouldn’t mind the inspiration if it were executed with originality, but the result feels like a lackluster imitation.
For instance, the city of Neon, intended to evoke the atmosphere of Cyberpunk, comes across as a parody. Combat attempts to mimic Mass Effect’s style but fails due to chaotic execution – there’s no cover system, ammunition runs out quickly, and enemies are unnaturally resilient.
Gameplay Mechanics and Flaws
Stealth Mode: Practically useless. Even with a silencer and maximum points in stealth, it’s nearly impossible to eliminate enemies without being immediately detected.
Story: Without giving away spoilers, the narrative feels disjointed and often nonsensical. Characters are shallow, emotionless, and lack depth.
Combat System: Gunfights are repetitive and boring, with weapon customization providing little tangible benefit.
Silent Protagonist: The lack of voice acting for the main character removes any emotional connection to the story.
Positives
The only bright spot is the ship-building system, which offers a wide range of customization options.
Verdict
As a long-time Bethesda fan, I must admit that Starfield was a profound disappointment. Rather than building on its strengths, such as the world of Elder Scrolls, Bethesda has released a game that feels unnecessary and uninspired.
